The only difference may be that used books will most likely not come with any additional supplements, such as access codes, DVDS, etc that new books come with.Q: Can I highlight in my book and still sell it back?A: Yes, you may highlight in any book you purchase/rent from us although we recommend not highlighting in rental books. Books that have been excessively highlighted so much as to hinder future students from highlighting may have their values decreased.Q: How much will I receive for my used book at sellback?A: Amount received upon book buyback depends on the book and if there has been a faculty order for the book to be used in the following semesters. If this is the case we will pay up to 50% of the current book price. However if we have not received a faculty request for the upcoming semesters, the value will depend upon the used book wholesaler and national demand for the book.Students can check the current sellback prices for their textbooks by visiting the book buyback page and typing in each book's ISBN number.Rental TextbooksWe offer certain textbooks for rental each semester. While renting can be a much less expensive option than buying new or used books, rentals do not have any sellback value. Our rental must be returned by a specific date at the end of the rental semester or students are subject to late fees. Failure to return a rental after an extended period of time after the initial return date will result in a charge to replace the entire book. This charge is not the difference between the rental cost and the purchase price.Q: Would it be cheaper to rent or to buy a book and then sell it back?A: While all textbook prices differ, renting is almost always the least expensive option when choosing textbooks.Q: Why aren't all of my textbooks available to rent?A: The selection of rental books is based upon if the rental is the new edition, non-bundled, and used in core classes. These classes must have high enough enrollment that people will have incentive to rent rather than buy. Because majority of texts are likely to change new editions yearly and because some books are paperback, these textbooks will not be available for rent.Q: What if I rent a book and it is lost or stolen?A: If you happen to lose a rental you will be responsible for paying for the textbook. The amount will be the cost of a new replacement textbook plus a replacement fee. If you purchase a rental online through out website and lose the text, you will be charged by the rental company rather than by us. If you purchase a rental in-store you will be charged by us.Q: Can I rent a textbook online from The Iowa Hawk Shop?A: Yes, are able to rent textbooks using our website. On our website you may be given the option to rent or purchase textbooks. If the rental option is available for the particular textbook you are interested in, then you will be able to add the rental to your cart.Q: How exactly do I rent a textbook?A: When looking to rent a textbook you will select the particular text you want and inform the cashier that you will be wanting to rent, rather than purchase the text. The cashier will give you a specific date that you must return the text by in order to avoid any late fees. When renting, it is important to give the cashier your university email address rather than your personal one so that they can look you up in the system. It is also important to keep your receipt so that there aren't any mixups when you come to rent your textbooks. Q: How do I return a rental?A: When it is nearing the rental return date for your textbook bring the text to the Hawk Shop along with your original receipt for proof of return. Your original receipt will confirm that you purchased the rental and that your rental is properly checked back in. You may also give your university email address in case you do not have your receipt.Digital Textbooks (E-Books)Digital Textbooks or E-Books have become an environmentally-friendly and cost-efficient alternative to renting or purchasing textbooks. Most E-books are utilized by activating an access code that you purchase online from the textbook distributor or 3rd party source. E-Books can be accessed online or some texts offer mobile apps. This allows you to access the particular text in an electronic, rather than print, format.Important Things to Know:E-books come in electronic format only. When purchasing e-books know that there is no actual textbook, rather you are purchasing access to the text online.E-books have a select life depending on the text you are buying and the use for the text. Some E-books last for only 90 days while some can last up to 180 days. E-books are essentially a rental book accessed online.E-books cannot be returned or refunded once you have used the access code.
